Best places to scuba dive in October
October is the best month for choice. Cocos leads on established pelagic action; Banda Sea and Alor are Indonesia’s hammerhead attempts; Galápagos remains a conditional high-upside trip. Atauro and Wakatobi are the reef-first alternatives. If I wanted sharks I would choose Cocos; if I wanted remoteness and coral, Banda Sea.
Where should you dive in October?
Cocos Island is the first trip I would book. It ranks #4 overall at 9.5/10, and October sits inside its strict peak window of September — October. Go for hammerhead schools, whale sharks, marble rays.

Cocos Island
A long boat ride to a lot of sharks.
You spend roughly a day and a half getting there, and peak season is wet and rough. The trade is hammerheads over cleaning stations, plus whale sharks, marble rays, whitetips and the kind of fish biomass that makes an empty minute unlikely.

Banda Sea
The Indonesia trip for hammerheads.
This is a crossing rather than a loop: volcanic islands, sea-snake reefs and offshore pinnacles, with schools of hammerheads as the reason to go. They are never guaranteed. The consolation is that the dives between attempts are still far from the usual Indonesian circuit.

Galápagos
Great when the cold water turns up.
In a normal cold-current year, Darwin and Wolf are top-three diving: hammerheads, whale sharks, Galápagos sharks and turtles in the same frame. The warmer water reported in 2026 has made that action less consistent. I would still go, but not without reading logs from the previous few sailings.

Alor
Tropical diving with cold-water surprises.
Cold upwelling in the Pantar Strait can bring hammerheads within reach and occasionally push up a thresher or mola. Those dives are attempts, not appointments. Between them you get very good walls, odd macro and far fewer boats than Komodo or Raja.

Atauro Island
Come before everyone else does.
Atauro’s north coast drops almost straight into deep, clear water. The reason to go is simple: dense coral, steep walls and little dive traffic. October also puts migrating whales and other pelagics in the area, though the reef is strong enough without them.

Wakatobi
For the week when the reef is enough.
Wakatobi is for long wall dives with no pressure to race to the next sighting. The coral is beautiful and dependable. It sits down at seventeen because sharks and large pelagics are cameos, not because there is anything wrong with the reef.
