Diving Cocos Island: when to go and what it is really like
A long boat ride to a lot of sharks. You spend roughly a day and a half getting there, and peak season is wet and rough. The trade is hammerheads over cleaning stations, plus whale sharks, marble rays, whitetips and the kind of fish biomass that makes an empty minute unlikely.

Is Cocos Island worth diving now?
You spend roughly a day and a half getting there, and peak season is wet and rough. The trade is hammerheads over cleaning stations, plus whale sharks, marble rays, whitetips and the kind of fish biomass that makes an empty minute unlikely.
When is the best time to dive Cocos Island?
Go in September — October. This calendar does not reward shoulder season: those are the months I would actually spend the money on, not merely months when an operator can run a trip. Expect rain, swell and strong current. At Cocos those are peak-season conditions, not bad luck.
What will you actually see?
Hammerhead schools, Whale sharks, Marble rays, Huge biomass are the reasons to make the trip. Wild encounters vary, but the ranking assumes the best months above rather than an average week across the year.

- Huge biomass
How difficult is the diving?
Advanced; open-ocean experience. Expect rain, swell and strong current. At Cocos those are peak-season conditions, not bad luck.
Trip format: Liveaboard only, with a long Pacific crossing.
Why is Cocos Island ranked #4?
Cocos Island sits in the rare tier where the signature animals and the rest of the itinerary are both strong enough to build a year around.
The 9.5 score is one editorial opinion, not a visitor average. It weights sharks and other pelagics heavily, then asks whether the reef and the rest of the itinerary justify the flight.
