Diving Atauro Island: when to go and what it is really like

Come before everyone else does. Atauro’s north coast drops almost straight into deep, clear water. The reason to go is simple: dense coral, steep walls and little dive traffic. October also puts migrating whales and other pelagics in the area, though the reef is strong enough without them.

When is the best time to dive Atauro Island?

Go in October. This calendar does not reward shoulder season: those are the months I would actually spend the money on, not merely months when an operator can run a trip. Usually a calm crossing, clear water and deep walls very close to shore.
