Diving Galápagos: when to go and what it is really like
Great when the cold water turns up. In a normal cold-current year, Darwin and Wolf are top-three diving: hammerheads, whale sharks, Galápagos sharks and turtles in the same frame. The warmer water reported in 2026 has made that action less consistent. I would still go, but not without reading logs from the previous few sailings.

Is Galápagos worth diving now?
In a normal cold-current year, Darwin and Wolf are top-three diving: hammerheads, whale sharks, Galápagos sharks and turtles in the same frame. The warmer water reported in 2026 has made that action less consistent. I would still go, but not without reading logs from the previous few sailings.
When is the best time to dive Galápagos?
Go in August — October. This calendar does not reward shoulder season: those are the months I would actually spend the money on, not merely months when an operator can run a trip. Cold upwelling, rough water and strong current when the system is working as hoped.
What will you actually see?
Hammerheads, Whale sharks, Galápagos sharks, Endemic life are the reasons to make the trip. Wild encounters vary, but the ranking assumes the best months above rather than an average week across the year.

How difficult is the diving?
Advanced only. Cold upwelling, rough water and strong current when the system is working as hoped.
Trip format: Liveaboard for Darwin and Wolf, which are the point of this ranking.
Why is Galápagos ranked #10?
Galápagos is an excellent trip with one meaningful tradeoff—usually animal reliability, reef consistency or demanding conditions.
The 8.8 score is one editorial opinion, not a visitor average. It weights sharks and other pelagics heavily, then asks whether the reef and the rest of the itinerary justify the flight.
