Is Komodo worth diving now?

Komodo has range. One day you watch mantas over a rubble channel; the next you fly past anthias, reef sharks and tuna on a northern pinnacle. Not every reef is pristine, but the best sites mix current, colour and big animals unusually well for somewhere this easy to reach.

When is the best time to dive Komodo?

Go in July — August. This calendar does not reward shoulder season: those are the months I would actually spend the money on, not merely months when an operator can run a trip. Dry-season seas, real current and much colder water in the south than in the north.

What will you actually see?

Reef mantas, Drift dives, Sharks and tuna, Coral variety are the reasons to make the trip. Wild encounters vary, but the ranking assumes the best months above rather than an average week across the year.

How difficult is the diving?

Confident intermediate to advanced. Dry-season seas, real current and much colder water in the south than in the north.

Trip format: Liveaboard for the full north-to-south range; day boats cover less ground.
